Animal Production: Poultry (Broilers & Layers)

Course Objective

The Purpose of this skills program is to provide learners with a basic understanding as well as application of: The correct handling of poultry, treatment of pests and diseases, correct on-farm poultry feeding practices, basic breeding behavior and the harvesting of poultry products.

In addition they will be well positioned to extend their learning and practice into other areas of animal production and agriculture ensuring profitability of agricultural enterprises.

Target Audience

The range of typical learners include persons interested in gaining a better understanding of basic agricultural practices and start their own farming enterprise.

Breeding stock and layers

– Implementation of hygienic measures.

– Handling of hens in the battery.

– Execution of lighting programme.

– Care of nests for breeders.

– Feeding of chickens.

– Prevention of diseases and pests.

– Controlling pests.

Broilers

– Housing / Preparation of the house for arrival of chicks / Prior to chick placement.

– Arrival of chicks / Treatment of chicks day 1 to day 7.

– Implementation of hygienic measures.

– Preparation and feeding of broilers / feed management / water management.

– Catching of broilers, identifying signs of disorder, execution of veterinary treatment.

– Care of drinking and feeding troughs.

– Controlling of temperature and airflow in broiler.
